　　6. instead of，in place of 這組詞都有 “替代” 之意。

　　instead of： “代替、而不是、不……而……” 可以引導(dǎo)動(dòng)名詞、名詞、代詞乃至介詞短語，用法比in place of 更為廣泛。

　　How is it that you have come instead of your father?“怎么你代替你父親來了?”

　　They built a reservoir half way up the mountain instead of at thetop. “他們不是在山頂而是在半山腰修建了一個(gè)水庫(kù)?！?/P>

　　in place of： “代替、用……而不用、取代……” 只能用于名詞、代詞，而且可以寫作in one’s place。

　　Jane couldn't go ,so I attended the conference in her place. " 簡(jiǎn)不能脫身，所以我代替她出席了會(huì)議?！?/P>

　　The Vice President talked at the meeting in place of the President becaue the President was sick. “由于總統(tǒng)生病，副總統(tǒng)代替他在會(huì)上講話?！?/P>

　　30.begin，commence，initiate，start 四個(gè)詞都可作 “開始’但仍有差異。

　　begin是這組詞中最常用的，強(qiáng)調(diào)從零開始。含與其反義詞end 相對(duì)比之意。如：

　　The meeting begins at 8 o'clock. 會(huì)議8 點(diǎn)鐘開始。begin 可后接介詞at，on ，upon ，with，含義各有不同。

　　begin at表示從某個(gè)特定點(diǎn) “開始”。如：

　　Let us begin at the third chapter，“讓我們從第三章開始?！?/P>

　　begin on/upon 表示 “著手從事” 某方面的工作，如：

　　we must begin on the govemment survey tomorrow. “明天我們必須著手研究政府的調(diào)查 ( 報(bào)告) 。

　　begin with 表示在確定順序時(shí)作為第一件要做的事。如：

　　We alwars begin with the hardest problems. “我們總是先對(duì)付最困難的問題?！?/P>

　　start 含與stop相對(duì)比之義，常表示某件事中斷后又重新開始。如：The children liked to see the train start. “孩子們希望看到火車啟動(dòng)。”

　　He is starting his watch aftr it has stopped. “手表停了之后他正在上發(fā)條使它重新開始走?！?/P>

　　start 與begin 相比，start 側(cè)重在 “開始” 這一動(dòng)作上，含突然開始之意：而begin 則側(cè)重表示為實(shí)現(xiàn)某一目標(biāo)的整個(gè)奮斗中的第一步，含 “起點(diǎn)” 之意。試比較：

　　One of the students decided to start a college magazine. 有位學(xué)生決定創(chuàng)辦一份?？?。( 創(chuàng)辦后是否能持久不清楚)

　　He began a coure of sludy leading to a doctornte. ”他開始了一門博士學(xué)位課程。(打算為之而努力奮斗) ”

　　start，begin都可后接動(dòng)名詞或動(dòng)詞不定式作賓語。如：

　　She began/started to write when she was only a high school student. 。她上高中時(shí)就開始寫作了。

　　She started/began skiing last winter. “她從去年冬天開始滑雪?！?/P>

　　commence 比begin ，start 正式，側(cè)重表示 “開始”訴訟程序、宗教或其他儀式、軍事行為等。如：

　　The church servie commenced with a hymn. 禮拜以唱贊美詩開始。

　　commence 不應(yīng)用于一般場(chǎng)合，如不應(yīng)講：Commence to eat your breakfast.;而應(yīng)用begin to eat 來表示。

　　initiate 強(qiáng)調(diào)做某件事所邁出的第一步，但不包含所開始的事的結(jié)尾，常指始動(dòng)力，可譯成“開創(chuàng)、發(fā)動(dòng)、發(fā)起”。如：

　　He inisiated a scheme for helping old people with shopping and housework. 。他發(fā)起了幫助老人買東西、做家務(wù)的計(jì)劃。(他不一定參與具體活動(dòng)) ”

　　initiate 常與cany on ，contine ，maintain 形成對(duì)照，因此除口語以外，在表示“開創(chuàng)”，“發(fā)起” 時(shí)，initiate 比begin，start 更為具體、確切。試比較：

　　He initiated the negotiation. 他首創(chuàng)談判。( 但不一定參加隨后的談判)

　　He began the negotiations. 他開始了談判。( 指來自參加談判的全過程)
