Women who live in the world’s highest communities tend to give birth to under-weight babies, a new study suggests. These babies may grow into adults with a high risk of heart disease and strokes.(環(huán)球網(wǎng)校2016年職稱英語考試《綜合類》閱讀判斷題專項(xiàng)小測第三套)

Research has hinted that newborns in mountain communities are lighter than average. But it wasn’t clear whether this is due to reduced oxygen levels at high altitude or because their mothers are under-nourished—many people who live at high altitudes are relatively poor compared with those living lower down.

To find out more, Dino Giussani and his team at Cambridge University studied the records of 400 births in Bolivia during 1997 and 1998. The babies were born in both rich and poor areas of two cities: La Paz and Santa Cruz. La Paz is the highest city in the would, at 3.65 kilometers above sea level, while Santa Cruz is much lower, at 0.44 kilometers.

Sure enough, Giussani found that the average birth weight of babies in La Paz was significantly lower than in Santa Cruz. This was true in both high and low-income families. Even babies born to poor families in Santa Cruz were heavier on average than babies born to wealthy families in lofty La Paz. “We were very surprised by this result,” says Giussani.

The results suggest that babies born at high altitude are deprived of oxygen before birth. “This may trigger the release or suppression of hormones that regulate growth of the unborn child, “says Giussani.

His also found that high-altitude babies tended to have relatively larger heads compared with their bodies. This is probably because a fetus starved of oxygen will send oxygenated blood to the brain in preference to the rest of the body.

Giussani wants to find out if such babies have a higher risk of disease in later life. People born in La Paz might be prone to heart trouble in adulthood, for example. Low birth weight is a risk factor for coronary heart disease. And newborns with a high ratio of head size to body weight are often predisposed to high blood pressure and strokes in later life.

  練習(xí):

1.According to the passage, one of the reasons why newborns in mountain communities are underweight is that their mothers are underweight.

  A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned

  2. Giussani’s team members are all British researchers and professors from Cambridge University.

  A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned

  3. Giussani did not expect to find that the weight of a baby had little to do with the financial conditions of the family he was born into.

  A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned

  4. The weight of a newborn has to do with the supply of oxygen even when he was still in his mother’s womb.

  A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned

  5. High-altitude babies have heads that are larger than their bodies.

  A. Right B. Wrong C. Not mentioned

  6. High-altitude babies have longer but thinner limbs than average.

The basic computer mouse is an amazingly clever invention with a relatively simple design that allows us to point at things on the computer and it is very productive. Think of all the things you can do with a mouse like selecting text for copying and pasting1, drawing, and even scrolling on the page with the newer mice with the wheel. Most of us use the computer mouse daily without stopping to think2 how it works until it gets dirty and we have to learn how to clean it. We learn to point at things before we learn to speak, so the mouse is a very natural pointing device. Other computer pointing devices include light pens, graphics tablets and touch screens, but the mouse is still our workhorse.

The computer mouse was invented in 1964 by Douglas Englehart of Stanford University. As computer screens became more popular and arrow keys were used to move around a body of text, it became clear that a pointing device that allowed easier motion through the text and even selection of text would be very useful. The introduction of the mouse, with the Apple Lisa computer in 1983, really started the computer public on the road to relying on the mouse for routine computer tasks.3

How does the mouse work? We have to start at the bottom, so think upside down for now. It all starts with the mouse ball. As the mouse ball in the bottom of the mouse rolls over the mouse pad. it presses against arid turns two shafts. The shafts are connected to wheels with several small holes in them. The wheels have a pair of small electronic light-emitting devices called light-emitting diodes (LED) mounted on either side4. One LED sends a light beam to the LED on the other side. As the wheels spin and a hole rotates by, the light beam gets through to the LED on the other side. But a moment later the light beam is blocked until the next hole is in place. The LED detects a changing pattern of light, converts the pattern into an electronic signal, and sends the signal to the computer through wires in a cable that goes out the mouse body. This cable is the tail that helps give the mouse its name. The computer interprets the signal to tell it where to position the cursor on the computer screen.

So far we have only; discussed the basic computer mouse that most of you probably have or have used.5 One problem with this design is that the mouse gets dirty as the ball rolls over the surface and picks up dirt. Eventually you have to clean your mouse. The newer optical mice avoid this problem by having no moving parts.

Studies show that children who eat breakfast do better in school It doesn't take much further thought to believe that adults will feel better and perform better at work as well. Whether you work at home,on the farm,at the office,at school,or on the road,it is not a good idea to skip(故意略去)breakfast.

If we don't eat breakfast, we are likely to become fired when our brains and bodies run low on fuel. By mid—morning,a lot of us grab a cup of coffee,or wolf down a sugary candy bar to wake up again. This might work for a few minutes, but by lunchtime we are hungry, bad—tempered, and perhaps our mood might make us a 1ittle more likely to make unhealthy choices at lunch. Eating a good breakfast sets the tone for the rest of the day.(環(huán)球網(wǎng)校2016年職稱英語考試《綜合類》閱讀判斷題專項(xiàng)小測第三套)

People who eat breakfast are generally more likely to maintain a healthy weight. Many people believe that they will lose weight if they skip meals, but that isn't a good idea. The body expects to be refueled a few times a day,so start with a healthy breakfast.

A healthy breakfast should contain some protein(蛋白質(zhì))and some fiber(纖維).Protein can come from meat, eggs, beans, or soy(大豆).Fiber can be found in whole cereals(谷物),grains or in fruits. A good example of a healthy breakfast might be something simple like a hardboiled egg,an orange, and a bowl of whole grain cereal with soy milk.
