  Drinking Water

Drinking water that looks clean may still contain bugs (蟲(chóng)子), which can cause illness. A

small company called Genera Technologies has produced a testing method in three stages,

which shows whether water is safe. The new test shows if water needs chemicals added to

it, to destroy anything harmful. It was invented by scientist Dr. Adrian Patton, who started

Genera five years ago. He and his employees have developed the test together with a British

  water company.

Andy Headland, Genera's marketing director, recently presented the test at a conference in

the USA and forecasted good American sales for it. Genera has already sold 11 of its tests

at $42,500 a time in the UK and has a further four on order. It expects to sell another 25

tests before the end of March. The company says it is the only test in the UK to be approved

  by the government.

Genera was formed five years ago and until October last year had only five employees; it

now employs 14. Mr. Headland believes that the company should make around $19 million

by the end of the year in the UK alone.

Genera Technologies has developed a method that determines whether water is clean.

  (21) The British government is helping Dr. Parton to sell the tests abroad.

  A: Right

  B: Wrong

  C: Not mentioned

  Hints for Reading Practice

1 Most of us can find 15 minutes or half an hour each day for some regular activity. For

example, one famous surgeon always spent 15 minutes reading something before he went to

sleep each day. Whether he went to bed at 10 p.m. or 2:30 a.m. made no difference.

2 "Speed Reading" courses teach students how to read more quickly. In such

courses, teachers often ask students to find out how many words a minute he is reading. You

can do this too: look at your watch every 5 or 10 minutes and write down the page number

  you have reached.

3 Obviously, you should not increase your reading speed if you do not understand what you

are reading. If you find something you don't understand in the book, or you cannot

remember clearly the details of what is said, why not read the chapter again?

4 Take four or five pages of an interesting book you happen to be reading now. Read these

pages as fast as you can. Don't worry about whether you understand or not. If you keep

doing this"lightning speed" reading for a period of time, you will usually find that your

  normal speed has increased.

5 Most paragraphs in an article have a topic sentence that expresses the central idea. The

opening paragraph often suggests the general direction and content of the article, while

paragraphs that follow expand or support the first. The closing paragraph often gives a

summary of the most important points of the article.

  Paragraph 2 __________

A: The organization of an article

  B: Check your reading speed

C: A way to increase your reading speed

  D: Check your understanding

  E: Read something every day

  F: Read extensively

A: The organization of an article

  B: Check your reading speed

C: A way to increase your reading speed

  D: Check your understanding

  E: Read something every day

  F: Read extensively

  答案:C

  解析:第四段介紹了不管你是否理解了所讀過(guò)內(nèi)容的意思,也要盡可能快速地閱讀,這樣堅(jiān)持一段時(shí)間之后閱讀速度自然就提高了。

  (26)Paragraph 5 __________

A: The organization of an article

  B: Check your reading speed

C: A way to increase your reading speed

  D: Check your understanding

  E: Read something every day

  F: Read extensively

  解析:第五段講了通常情況下各個(gè)段落的作用,該段提到起始段、中間段落以及結(jié)尾段,顯然說(shuō)明了文章的結(jié)構(gòu)。

(27)You are advised to read something before you__________.

  A: find the topic sentences

B: find out the new words

  C: keep reading fast

D: go to bed every day

E: keep a note of their reading speed

F: look at your watch every few minutes

Outside-the-Classroom Learning Makes a Big Difference

Putting a bunch of college students in charge of a $300,000 Dance Marathon, fundraiser

Wisconsin, conducted a survey in February of students involved in campus organizations.

She said the desire for friendship was the most frequently cited reason for joining.

At large universities like Fangmeyer's, which has more than 40,000 students, the students

first of all want to find a way to "belong in their own comer of campus".

Katie Rowley, a Wisconsin senior, confirms the survey's findings. "I wanted to make the

campus feel smaller by joining an organization where I could not only get involved on

campus but also find a group of friends."

All of this tall of friendship, however, does not mean that students aren't thinking about

their resumes. "I think that a lot of people do join to 'fatten up their resume'," said Heitner.

"At the beginning of my college career, I joined a few of these organizations, hoping to get

a start in my leadership roles."

But without passion student leaders can have a difficult time trying to weather the storms

that come. For example, in April, several student organizations at Wisconsin teamed up for

an event designed to educate students about homelessness and poverty. Student leaders had

to face the problem of solving disagreements, moving the event because of rainy weather,

and dealing with the university's complicated bureaucracy.

"Outside-of-the-classroom-learning really makes a big difference," Fangmeyer said.

An extracurricular activity like raising a fund of $300,000 is risky because most student

  Shopping at Second-hand Clothing Stores

When 33-year-old Pete Barth was in college, shopping at second-hand clothing stores was

just something he did-"like changing the tires on his car." He looked at his budget and

decided he could save a lot of money by shopping for clothes at thrift shops.

"Even new clothes are fairly disposable (可丟掉的) and wear out after a couple of

years,"Barth said. "In thrift shops, you can find some great stuff whose quality is better than

  new clothes."

Since then, Barth, who works at a Goodwill thrift shop in the US state of Florida, has found

that there are all kinds of reasons for shopping for second-hand clothing. Some people, like

him, shop to save money. Some shop for a crazy-looking shirt. And some shop as a means

of conserving energy and helping the environment.

Pat Akins, an accountant at a Florida Salvation Army (SA) (救世軍) thrift shop, said that,

for her, shopping at thrift shops is a way to help the environment.

"When my daughter was little, we looked at it as recycling," Akins said. "Also, why pay 30

dollars for a new coat when you can get another one for a lot less?"

Akins said that the SA has shops all over the US-- "some as big as department stores". All of

the clothes are donated (捐贈(zèng)), and when they have a surplus (盈余). They'll have "stuff a

bag"specials where customers can fill a grocery sack with clothes for only 5 or 10 dollars.

Julia Slocum,22, points cut, however, that the huge amount of second-hand clothing in the

US is the result of American wastefulness.

"I'd say that second-hand stores are the result of our wasteful, materialistic culture," said

Slocum, who works for a pro-conservation organization, the Center for a New American

  Dream.

"Thrift shops prevent that waste from going to landfills (垃圾填埋場(chǎng)); they give clothing a

second life, provide cheaper clothing for those who can't afford new ones and generate

(生成) income for charities. They also provide a way for the wealthy and middle classes to

shed (擺脫) some of the guilt for their level of consumption."

Which statement about Barth is NOT true?

A: He is 33 years old now.

B: He works at a Goodwill thrift shop.

C: He was a college student many years ago.

D: He works at a Salvation Army thrift shop.

  Exercise Lowers Employers' Health Costs

Companies can save millions in health-care costs simply by encouraging their employees to

exercise a little bit, researchers reported on Friday.

They said obese (肥胖的) employees had higher health-care costs, but lowered those

expenses by exercising just a couple of times a week, without even losing any weight.

Feifei Wang and colleagues at the University of Michigan studied 23,500 workers at

  General Motors.

They estimated that getting the most sedentary (慣于久坐的) obese workers to exercise

would have saved about $790,000 a year, or about 1.5 percent of health-care costs for the

whole group,Company-wide. The potential savings could reach $7.1 million per year, they

reported in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Of the whole group of workers, about 30 percent were of normal weight,45 percent were

overweight (超重的), and 25 percent were obese. Annual health-care costs averaged $2,200

for normal weight, $2,400 for the overweight, and $2,700 for obese employees.

But among workers who did no exercise, health-care costs went up by at least $100 a year,

and were $3,000 a year for obese employees who were sedentary.

But adding two or more days of light exercise, at least 20 minutes of exercise or workhard

enough to increase heart rate and breathing, lowered costs by on average $500 per employee

  a year, the researchers found.

"This indicates that physical activity behavior could reduce at least some of the harmful

effects of excess body fat, and in consequence, help lower the health-care costs," Wang and

  colleagues wrote.

How can employees help lower the health-care costs?

  A: By taking more rest.

  B: By eating less.

C: By exercising a little bit.

  D: By saving more money.

  答案:C
