SOS
【課文】
When a light passenger plane flew off course some time ago, it crashed in the mountains and its pilot was killed. The only passengers, a young woman and her two baby daughters, were unhurt. It was the middle of winter. Snow lay thick on the ground. The woman knew that the nearest village was miles away. When it grew dark, she turned a suitcase into a bed and put the children inside it, covering them with all the clothes she could find. During the night, it got terribly cold. The woman kept as near as she could to the children and even tried to get into the case herself, but it was too small. Early next morning, she heard planes passing overhead and wondered how she could send a signal. Then she had an idea. She stamped out the letters 'SOS' in the snow. Fortunately, a pilot saw the signal and sent a message by radio to the nearest town. It was not long before a helicopter arrived on the scene to rescue the survivors of the plane crash.

不久前，一架輕型客機偏離了航線，在山區(qū)墜毀，飛行員喪生。
course這個詞除了表示課程、講座等，還有其他很多意思，在這個句子里，course表示(船只或飛行器的)航向、航線。而fly off則表示偏離、飛出，所以句子意思就是客機偏離航線。
course的其他意思有：

這里的crash作動詞，crash in /into sth. 撞上某物
crash作動詞除了表示撞到，撞擊，也可以表示(政府、企業(yè)等)突然倒臺、崩潰、破產(chǎn)等。
2. When it grew dark, she turned a suitcase into a bed.
天黑下來的時候，她把提箱當作小床。
這里的grow表示變得，變成。英語中表示變化的詞還有很多，例如become、turn、go、get，這幾個詞的區(qū)別如下：
這一類系動詞+形容詞的形式中，形容詞作表語。
①系動詞grow后面可以接表示人或物的特征的靜態(tài)形容詞作表語，也可以接表示天氣的形容詞作表語。它側重于“逐漸變成某種狀態(tài)”，是逐漸、加強的過程。上面句子中就是grow+dark 表示天變黑這一狀態(tài)。
②而go+形容詞 多表示從好的狀態(tài)變成壞的狀態(tài)，如：go blind 變瞎 go bankrupt 破產(chǎn)
③turn有“成為與以前完全不同的東西”的含義，指狀態(tài)和形式的改變，強調(diào)變化的結果。如：
Leaves turn yellow in autumn.
樹葉到秋天就變黃了。
在課文句子里還有turn into這個短語，即由一種情況變?yōu)榱硪环N情況。如：
Water turns into ice when it freezes.
水冷凝后就變成冰了。
④become 普通用詞，表示從一個狀態(tài)變成另一個狀態(tài)，其前面的主語即可以是人，也可以是物。
⑤get+形容詞”多用在口語中。get能替代become，但become較為正式。例如：
Our life is getting lhappier and happier.
我們的生活越來越幸福。
3. The woman kept as near as she could to the children.
這位婦女盡可能地靠近孩子。
as...as one could/can和as...as possible意思相同，都表示盡可能......

①heard planes passing是用現(xiàn)在分詞passing作賓語planes的補足語。
表示感覺和心理狀態(tài)的動詞，如hear, feel, find, listen to, look at, watch, notice, observe, see, smell 等詞的賓語可以用現(xiàn)在分詞作賓語補足語。
另外，用現(xiàn)在分詞和過去分詞作賓語補足語兩者的意思是不同的。過去分詞作補語表示“被動”和“完成”的意義;而現(xiàn)在分詞作補語表示“主動”和“進行”的意義。如：
I notice Tom walking alone to the park.
我注意到湯姆正獨自向公園走去。
I noticed Tom walked alone to the park.
我剛看到湯姆一個人去了公園。
②wonder作動詞表示疑惑、驚訝，后面可接at、about等介詞，如wonder at sth. 對……感到驚訝 wonder about sth. 對某事感到好奇，自忖……
另外，還有wonder +how /what /when等句。
5. She stamped out the letters 'SOS' in the snow.
她在雪地上踩出了“SOS”這3個字母。
stamp除了做名詞表示郵票;印花;圖章，還可作動詞表示踏平;踩扁等意思，這個句子中stamp就表示踩;跺。

stamp作動詞還可表示在紙張等表面蓋上公章、圖案等，或是貼郵票。如stamp A on B=stamp B with A 在B上用A 蓋章
